What is Pinyin?
Pinyin (拼音, literally "spell sounds") is the official romanization system for Standard Mandarin Chinese. Developed in the 1950s, it uses the Latin alphabet to represent Chinese sounds, making it an essential tool for learners to master pronunciation before tackling characters.
Unlike English, where letters can have multiple pronunciations, Pinyin follows consistent phonetic rules. Each syllable combines an initial (consonant sound) with a final (vowel sound), plus one of four tones that give each syllable its meaning.
