The Story Behind 画龙点睛
The Dragon's Eyes
During the Southern and Northern Dynasties, there was a famous painter named Zhang Sengyou.
He was commissioned to paint four dragons on the wall of Anle Temple in Jinling (modern-day Nanjing).
Zhang painted the dragons beautifully, but deliberately left out their eyes. When asked why, he said, "If I paint the eyes, the dragons will come to life and fly away."
People didn't believe him and insisted he paint the eyes. Reluctantly, Zhang painted the eyes on two of the dragons.
Immediately, thunder and lightning struck, the wall cracked, and the two dragons with eyes came to life, riding on clouds and flying up to heaven. The two dragons without eyes remained painted on the wall.
张僧繇于金陵安乐寺画四龙于壁,不点睛。每曰:"点之即飞去。"人以为妄诞,固请点之。须臾,雷电破壁,二龙乘云腾去上天,二龙未点眼者见在。
