The Story Behind 对牛弹琴
Playing the Lute to a Cow
Gong Mingyi (公明仪) was a famous musician in ancient China, known for his beautiful lute playing.
One day, he decided to play his most elegant and sophisticated piece, "Qing Jiao" (清角), to a cow.
He sat down near the cow and began playing the complex, refined melody with great skill and emotion.
The cow, however, continued grazing and eating grass, completely ignoring the beautiful music.
Gong Mingyi was disappointed. He thought the cow didn't appreciate his music because it couldn't hear.
But the truth was that the cow could hear the music - it just couldn't understand or appreciate it because it was not suited to a cow's nature.
The story teaches that it's pointless to try to communicate something sophisticated to someone who cannot understand or appreciate it.
