What is HSK? A Complete Guide to the Chinese Proficiency Test

Published on November 26, 2025

The Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) is the standard standardized test for non-native speakers of Chinese. Whether you want to study in China, work for a Chinese company, or just measure your progress, HSK is the gold standard.

1. What is HSK?

HSK stands for Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (汉语水平考试), translated as the Chinese Proficiency Test. It is organized by Hanban (Confucius Institute Headquarters) and is the only standardized test for non-native Chinese speakers recognized by the Chinese government.

2. The Grading System (HSK 1-6 vs HSK 3.0)

For years, HSK had 6 levels. HSK 1 was the most basic (150 words), and HSK 6 was the most advanced (over 5000 words). Recently, a new system known as 'HSK 3.0' has been introduced, expanding it to 9 levels divided into three stages: Beginner (1-3), Intermediate (4-6), and Advanced (7-9), covering much more vocabulary and cultural knowledge.

3. Why Take the HSK?

Many universities in China require HSK 4 or 5 for admission to degree programs. Companies often use HSK scores to verify language skills. Even for casual learners, passing a level provides a tangible milestone and motivation.

4. How to Prepare?

Preparation involves mastering the required vocabulary, grammar, and listening skills for your target level. Consistent practice, including writing characters (Hanzi) correctly, is crucial. Tools like Hanzi Stroke can help you master the writing part effectively.
